Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)1. DEFINITION: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the process that identifies and evaluates the possible environmental impacts including social, biophysical, natural, and economical in a proposed project.

The EIA requires the involvement of ecologists to ensure all studies and information are accurate before drawing any conclusion. Thanks to the Environmental Impact Assessment all relevant effects of developed proposals may be assessed prior to their approval.

Nowadays, most information collected ought to be communicated, consulted and analysed under an ecological and humanitarian point of view. Thus, the EIA becomes one of the best tools to help identify how to minimise environmental degradation.

In Australia, Environmental Impact Assessments are performed under the regulation of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. According to the terms of this Act, each state has its own law planned according to land use and development type.
